Today we spent practicing what we have learned dealing with metric measurement over the past few weeks. We worked more with density as well as metric conversions using "decimal hopping." If you did not get "checked out" on the conversion worksheet in class today please try to attend an extra help session this week or next to make sure you master this concept!

Homework: The front side of the chemical property and change worksheet (graphic organizer)> Use p. 50-55 in you text to help you complete this.

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Quiz today on scientific method and the measurement and properties of matter. Please complete the conversion practice worksheet for homework if you did not have a chance to after the quiz today.

Monday, August 29, 2011

In class we completed the mass, volume and density lab activity that we started Friday. If you did not turn this in please be ready to do so tomorrow. After, we practiced calculating volume and density.

Homework: study for the quiz tomorrow (scientific method, physical properties of matter and calculating density)

Friday, August 26, 2011

We completed our first lab today in class. The lab required us to practice measuring mass, volume and density so that we can use these properties to help us identify matter on Monday. If you did not complete the 5 density calculations, please do this over the weekend.

Have a great weekend!

In class today we looked at how to convert between different sized metric measurements. We also discussed the difference between accuracy and precision. Homework is the metric conversion page given in class: please ONLY complete side 2 #5-15 ODD. In addition if you had trouble with the online textbook last night please complete last nights assignment.

Note on online textbook: If you are having trouble using it you may need to disable your pop up blocker. Until you are sure that it works for you please bring your book home when necessary. Log in information:

In class today we discussed several different types of physical properties of matter. After, we used these properties to help us identify several "mystery objects." For homework tonight please complete questions 3-6 and 8-11 on page 43.

**Quiz Tuesday (9/30): chapter 1 and chapter 2, sections 1 and 2 only.

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

What is matter? How do we measure it? Today in class we tried to come up with a good definition for the word matter and we also discussed several ways we could measure it. These included taking the mass, volume, density and weight. Tonight for homework you should complete a Venn-diagram that compares and contrasts the terms mass and weight. You can use p. 41-42 in your text to assist you.

**If I have not received your signed syllabus or safety contract please try to bring it tomorrow!

Monday, August 22, 2011

Today we continued discussing the steps of the scientific method. Specifically we focused on making good observations. Tonight for homework please complete both sides of the observation vs. inference worksheet.

Friday, August 19, 2011

Today was the safety quiz. If you missed it please make sure to schedule a time to come in and make it up! After the quiz we discussed the mystery of the sunken ice cube and the scientific method. Please make sure to have all unsigned safety contracts and syllabus signed over the weekend.

Overall it was a great start to the year and I hope everyone has a great weekend!!

What is science? What does a scientist do, look like, say? What is physical science? All of these questions and more were answered in class today! We covered chapter 1, sections 1 and 3. For homework tonight you should complete your safety illustration if you did not in class as well as study for tomorrows safety quiz!

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

Today we reviewed the safety rules to be followed in the science lab. The safety illustration page was also assigned. If you did not complete it in class today you will need to do so at home by Friday. Remember, you have a safety quiz on Friday as well.
Day 2 in Physical Science: Today we took the pre-test for unit 1. After, we began to look through the syllabus and read through the safety rules. Please get the syllabus and safety contract signed by Friday. Also, you have a safety quiz on Friday.

Welcome Back!!

Hope everyone had a great summer. Today we focused on introductions and the basic expectations of 8th grade science. You received a hot pink sheet regarding this, please let me know if you have any questions! Homework tonight...give your parents the "parent homework" assignment.

I am looking forward to a great year!
